BIO INFORMATICS

Bioinformatics is a discipline that combines computer science and biology. We are developing a bioinformatics module to learn more about the gut microbiome by analyzing microbial DNA sequence data using publicly available bioinformatics tools. Gut microbiome studies are extremely relevant in the context of human health and will enable us to gain insights on how gut bacteria impact processes such as digestion, immunity and overall well-being of an individual. Through this module we hope to understand the concept of microbiomes and their importance by comparing microbial composition of a healthy gut to those with special needs. This module will also introduce a basic overview on DNA, genes and the process of sequencing. Designing a module like this will be a great way of introducing complex concepts into classrooms.
